I started playing traditional music 20 years ago after going to a festival while visiting family in Ireland and have been playing music in sessions every since. About 20 years ago I became interested in the making of flutes and after a few years of making flutes from scrap plastic or aluminium tubing, I decided that I would need some proper training if I was to make a flute I could be proud of. In 2007 I graduated from Newark and Sherwood college, where I studied the Woodwind Instrument Making and Repair Course. This course gave me a firm foundation in the basic techniques needed for making instruments, repair of the complete woodwind family of instruments and learning to make the tools needed to make flutes.
